Beginner / Group Surf Lessons

Our surf lessons for beginners are done in smaller groups to allow us to focus entirely on your own personal needs. This way you’ll get the most out of each and every session. You can come alone, or with a few friends. Whatever you choose we aim to have loads of fun when we teach you!

WHY SURFING? HERE ARE JUST A COUPLE OF REASONS!

  • You can’t explain the feeling you get when you ride a wave until you actually experience it, so get out there and give it a go and feel the ‘stoke’.
  • Surfing increases your strength, balance and fitness, not only that but simply spending time in the ocean positively impacts your health.
  • Along with becoming fit you will also become confident. Learning to surf, you will need courage to take on different conditions and grow your confidence!
  • Make new friends and become apart of the surfing community. Enjoy time together in the water catching some waves, having a laugh and most importantly having fun.
  • You never regret a surf!

What Do The Beginner / Group Surf Lessons Consist Of?

During the session we will break down learning to surf to make it as easy as possible for you. Our experienced instructors will start on the beach with the basics such as surf safety, features of the board, catching a wave, and how to master the ‘pop up’, before getting you in the water riding some waves! During the surf lessons we will develop a plan for your improvement leaving you with a clear and precise direction of what to do next so you can continue to improve on your surfing skills.

As the instructor to student ratio is much smaller we get to spend more time one-on-one with you and are able to provide more direct feedback than we would in larger group lessons. This helps your surfing skills to progress faster.

Dexters Surf Shop is an accredited Surfing England registered school (The UK’s National Governing Body). All of our coaches are Surfing England & SLSGB qualified, first aid trained, and DBS checked.

Do You Provide The Equipment?

We provide everything required to participate in the surf lesson. A selection of different sized foam boards, full wetsuits, lockers, toilets, and changing facilities – located at the shop.

Please remember that safety is always our number one priority and these lessons may be cancelled at short notice if it is too dangerous to go out into the water.

FAQ's

You will start with a quick 15-minute land lesson on the beach in front of our surf school, where you’ll get a proper introduction to the sport of surfing and learn the basic safety you need to be aware of before hitting the waves. If you have surfed with us before we will just have a quick recap and pick up where we left off.

Once in a quiet area of the water the instructor will help you catch waves, get you on your feet and have a great time! All whilst keeping you safe throughout the entire lesson.

The topics that will be covered during the lesson include: positioning yourself on the surfboard, paddling techniques, getting to your feet, proper surf stance, how to manoeuvre over waves, turning the surfboard, balancing, and water safety.
